Spring Gardening Tip Contest

Posted on April 22nd, 2010

We'd like to hear our neighbors best spring gardening tips and we are offering a prize for the best one. Neighbors can post their favorite gardening tip here as a comment. All postings have to be posted by April 30 to be considered. The winner will be chosen by the WVHA board and will win a $25 gift certificate to a local garden store.
(WVHA Boardmembers and their families are not eligible. Sorry. But please post your tips anyway. It's fun to share your gardening tips.)

I put my used coffee grinds at the root base of my rose bushes. I thought it was just a nice fertilizer, but I've had less yellow leaves and insects since I started using it.

Summer will be here soon and our watering rules will stay in force. So, to save water, have kids water the plants after they swim in the kiddy pool. Have them take buckets of water from the pool and water the plants when the pool needs to be emptied.

If you have a tall, lanky shrub or small tree that has stopped sprouting leaves (such as my Princess plant) and you don't want to remove it, plant a climbing plant such as a Clematis, Carolina, Potato or Night Blooming Jasmine at its base and use it as a natural structural support.

When deciding on new plants to plant in the garden think about plants that provide food. In the last few years I have added fruit trees, grape vines, blueberry bushes, blackberry and raspberry plants. I have also added a container garden for vegetables. It is about as "local" as you can get for your food. My kids can now see exactly where food comes from. Also, saving warmup water for the plants is great and I also had a rainbarrel installed.
